PRESS RELEASE: Irish Council for International Students appoints Laura Harmon as Executive Director
The Irish Council for International Students (ICOS) is delighted to announce the appointment of Laura Harmon as Executive Director. As a former president of the Union of Students Ireland, as well as a former board member of ICOS and the Higher Education Authority, Laura has a wealth of experience promoting the rights of students in Ireland.
Speaking on her recent appointment, ICOS Executive Director Laura Harmon said: ‘ I am honoured and delighted to assume the role of Executive Director of ICOS, as someone who has previously worked campaigning for students’ rights, I am looking forward to undertaking this new challenge. I will look to advocate on behalf of all international students, both English language and third level students, and will seek to have a meeting with Further and Higher Education Minster, Simon Harris, in the coming weeks to discuss the key challenges facing international students. I look forward to meeting all spokespersons on higher education in the Oireachtas to highlight the challenges facing international education and students who come to Ireland for their education.’
Harmon continued: ‘International students have faced ongoing difficulties as a result of Covid-19, most notably in areas such as the provision of online classes, their immigration status, accommodation and most recently insurance. The implementation of Level 5 restrictions by the government has added further pressure on international students, particularly those that have just arrived this semester.’
